Keyboard Layouts

All of our workstations Keyboard Languages have been configured to allow the keyboard layout to be selected for a range of languages. The list below shows the currently supported languages, and the shortcut key combinations required to select them.

Please note that, as is standard in Windows XP, any selection will only operate in the current window/application. If you open another web browser window, for example, you will need to make the language selection again for that window, otherwise the current system default of (EN) English (United States) will apply. To revert back to the default English (US) keyboard layout, use the shortcut shown below (i.e. Ctrl+Shift+0 ).

If you have trouble Sample French Keyboard Layout remembering what the selected keyboard layout looks like, a link to the Windows On- Screen Keyboard appears under Language Tools on both the Internet & Office menus (together with a link to Lingoes text translation software).

Note: Sometimes the On-Screen Keyboard is slow to update its display when a new language selection is made, however if you move the mouse cursor over it the display will refresh immediately!

If you require a character Character Map from a language not catered for by these key-board selections, the Character Map application (located on both the Internet & Office menus under the Language Tools listing) may help... otherwise, come and see us for assistance.

Spellchecking

In addition to the keyboard Spellcheck language options noted above, all of our workstations also support spellchecking of documents in a variety of languages. The spellcheck facility is available when using either Microsoft Word or OpenOffice.org Writer, and also from within both the Mozilla Firefox and Netscape Navigator browsers [when entering text].

For those who are unaware, OpenOffice.org Writer is a free open source word processor available from Sun Microsystems, which is capable of editing and saving Microsoft Word documents in their native format.

While a somewhat limited choice of languages is available in Microsoft Word, a much larger selection is supported in OpenOffice.org Writer, Mozilla Firefox and Netscape Navigator (and can be added to if required).
