Keyboard Layouts
All of our workstations
have been configured to allow the keyboard layout to be selected for
a range of languages. The list below shows the currently supported languages, and the shortcut
key combinations required to select them.
Please note that, as is standard in Windows XP, any selection will only operate in the current window/application. If you open another web browser window, for example, you will need to make the language selection again for that window, otherwise the current system default of (EN) English (United States) will apply. To revert back to the default English (US) keyboard layout, use the shortcut shown below (i.e. Ctrl+Shift+0 ).
If you have trouble
remembering what the selected keyboard layout looks like, a link to the Windows
On- Screen Keyboard appears under Language Tools
on both the Internet & Office menus
(together with a link to Lingoes
text translation software).
Note: Sometimes the On-Screen Keyboard is slow to update its display when a new language selection is made, however if you move the mouse cursor over it the display will refresh immediately!
If you require a character
from a language not catered for by these key-board selections, the Character Map
application (located on both the Internet & Office
menus under the Language Tools listing) may help...
otherwise, come and see us for assistance.

Text Translation
As an additional aid,
all of our workstations also support dictionary lookup and translation of text that appears anywhere
on the screen...
...in any application! To
enable this facility, first launch Lingoes (located under Language Tools
on both the Internet & Office menus),
then at any time during the remainder of your session, simply move the mouse cursor over a word
you are interested in, and press the «Ctrl» key.
A pop-up window will appear to display the result of the dictionary lookup and any translations available. At present... bidirectional translations are available between English and the following languages:
- 汉语 - Chinese (Simplified)
- 漢語 - Chinese (Traditional)
- Nederlands - Dutch
- Français - French

The pop-up window also displays icons [buttons] at the top that allow you to listen to how the word is pronounced, or perform additional [integrated] online Text Translations using the services of (e.g.) Systran, Promt, Cross, Yahoo, Google and Altavista, etc.
